Swami Vivekananda was a prominent personality of the 19th century of India. His birth anniversary is celebrated across the country as National Youth Day on January 12, every year. He was the disciple of yogi Ramakrishna Paramhansa who utterly understood the Ramakrishna Math and his teachings in Kolkata, the place he was born. Ramakrishna Mission, a spiritual movement based on the ancient hindu philosophy of vedanta globally led by Swami Vivekananda. In past years, Indians had had a huge impact of his teachings on so many freedom fighters who fought against colonial rule. Whether the father of nation said that reading his work, shows his love for the nation by making any individual aware of himself, Subhas Chandra Bose called Vivekananda “the maker of modern India”.
Every year “National Youth Day” is celebrated in India on January 12. Ample colleges and schools organise workshops and lectures to honour the teachings and students idealise him for the mindset he has inherently gifted us.
History and significance:
Swami Vivekananda’s birthday is observed as National Youth Day in India where more than half of the population is young. It was firstly observed in 1984 and marked for the very first time on January 12, 1985. The government had done research on Swami Vivekanada’s philosophy. Exploration of life can clearly be seen in his writings and considered as a great source of inspiration for the Youth.

The National Youth Day is commemorated by all the indians. The Government of India organises so many workshops. And printed magazines and posters are being distributed in colleges, institutions, and schools to spread awareness among youth. Ways to celebrate the youth are – through processions, speeches, youth conventions, music, seminars, Yoga Asanas, presentations, competitions in essay-writing, recitations and sports every year.
